Get a glimpse of life underwater with seawalker, where you can walk through a school of fish and see beautiful coral up close, without learning how to dive first.
Taking a stroll down Kuta’s busy streets or ambling down Petitenget Beach can either be a hassle or a treat depending on what situation you find yourself in. But walking underwater amongst colorful fish and beautiful coral is defi nitely one heck of a great experience!
Mind you, there are plenty of operators offering a similar activity as Seawalker and even sharing the same name, but you can be sure that the Seawalker in Sanur by Club Aqua Bali is the proper one. So why not head down to Puri Santrian Beach Resort & Spa to experience Seawalker? Get a little taste of what it might feel like to be Ariel. You know, Ariel... the redheaded mermaid who wished for a pair of legs to tread on land (though I can’t for the life of me understand why after experiencing the joys of being under the sea!).
Going Under
Unlike scuba diving where you need to obtain a license through a lengthy and expensive course, Seawalker allows you to experience life underwater with far less hassle. Really, all you need to do is show up, watch a safety orientation video (much like the ones prior to airplane takeoff), change into your swimsuit and apply sunscreen, and you’ll be all set!
You’ll put on specialized diving shoes provided by Seawalker to protect your feet from sharp coral or sea urchins (not that there are many of them). Afterwards, you will be led to a boat waiting just off the white sand beach that will ferry you to the pontoon sitting about 500 meters from the shore.
An instructor will give you one last briefing on simple hand signals for communicating once you’re in the water. Make sure you listen to the instructions, because it’s really important for you to be able to understand how to communicate in case of an emergency.
The staff will then put a harness on you, and once you’ve climbed down the stainless steel ladder at the end of pontoon and are about shoulder deep in the water, the staff will put a special pressurized diving helmet on you that will let you breathe just as if you were on land.
When you reach the sea floor, it will feel like you’ve been transported to another world. All you’ll be able to hear are the air bubbles coming out of your helmet, and you won’t be entirely in control of your movement because the sea current will gently sway your body about. There’s nothing to fear however, as your instructor will be with you the entire time and will lead you to an underwater spot where you can enjoy the beautiful colors of the schools of fish and coral that surround you.
At this spot there will be a long steel bar that you can use as an anchor while you take pictures with the fish and feed them fish food pellets. These cute and colorful fish will be so close to your helmet that you might feel the urge to pet them – in fact, it’s possible to do so because they won’t bite.
After interacting with the school of fish, you will be taken to a nearby coral formation where other, more colorful fish live. On my dive the instructor told me to put my hand on one coral head where there was a cute little blue fish swimming about, and as I put my hand on it the fish quickly pecked at my hand. It didn’t hurt a bit and it was thrilling to feel the “fish kiss”!
Back On Land
After your 30 minutes are up, a boat will be waiting for you by the pontoon to take you back ashore. If you book the whole Seawalker experience, you will have a lunch ready for you at the special Seawalker lounge overlooking the white sand beach. However, I personally suggest taking advantage of the ‘Bali Big Day Out’ package by Club Aqua. The package offers a full day filled with fun in Bali’s waters. Depending on the day and the weather, you might start your day rafting down the Telaga Waja River, then lunching at a nearby village surrounded by East Bali’s lush greenery, and then towards the afternoon you’ll spend teatime exploring the seafl oor with Seawalker.
